The Daughters of Charity Service for Persons with Intellectual Disability has a long history of involving volunteers in their Service. Over the years they have welcomed and used the talents and energies of volunteers in a variety of ways.
These include:
-
direct support through Parents and Friends associations
-
transition year students who provide direct support on programmes/activities
-
individual volunteer support in the area of direct support to programmes and assistance in engaging in social activities
-
the fundraising that goes on through the many committees that have substantially contributed and continue to contribute to Service developments.
This involvement adds a very important quality to the lives of persons with an intellectual disability. In Ireland there continues to be a very large commitment to volunteering and many bodies are very dependant on such inputs.
The Service welcomes such involvement and is endeavouring to put better structures in place for this area of service enhancement by appointing specific Volunteer Coordinators to introduce, train and support volunteers. In 2001 the European Year of the Volunteers a small crystal presentation was made to over 500 volunteers in acknowledgement and recognition of their support.
