What is a vocaton? PDF Print E-mail

Christ always has a personal word for each of us. He is always relating to me as a unique person for whom he has a special plan for my life-this is what a vocation is, a call from God to follow him along a certain path in life. Sometimes it’s not easy to recognise his presence in our lives because his presence is subtle, gentle and quiet. We are reminded of this in a beautiful passage from the book of 1 Kings: 19 when Elijah is told to look out for the Lord passing by.

claire_01b.jpg‘And behold the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind split the mountains, and broke in pieces and rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still, small breeze.’ And this is where Elijah found God, in the small breeze.

I may not find God’s presence where I expect to find him or in the way that I think I will find him because his presence often comes in quiet subtle ways but if I can listen to the still small voice within, then God will have an opportunity to come and speak a personal word to me in that silence and He will invite me to follow him in a particular way.

Can you take some time today to be still and listen out for that still small voice? God has a special plan for your life, do you know what it is?
