It is in the month of May that we see spring's complete and exuberant triumph over winter. For this reason, the long association of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the month of May is apt. It is through her that Jesus is born into the world - Jesus, whose resurrection is the promise for all of us of triumph over death. In Eamon Flanagan's poem below, the Mother of God continues to bring us the gifts that bring us life.
In John we read of the Kingdom
Being near, and within the person
Making the good ones truly become
Divine; and the ancient lesson
Grows more and more to fullest sense
In the scheme of the sacraments.
I was grateful for this background
When the Mother gave me to drink
The clearest water ever found
So, I stood at the rivers brink
As foretold by Ezekiel:
Baptism-flood, to create and heal.
Golden oil came out flowing too
The unguent of young girls and boys
To consecrate and seal anew,
And sign the pastor, who employs
The armoury of his Leader
To save, love the Church, and feed her.
She brought next the elements
Of the Mysteries, precious wine
And delicious bread, those presents
For the tasting of all, as for mine
Since her Son called us to belief
All can pray for these gifts - for life.
