In 1855, only a few years after the famine, four Daughters of Charity left France for Ireland to assist people in grave need. They cared for people in their homes, they set up a night school for girls working in factories, and they brought assistance to orphans and people with mental illness.
Ever since, the Daughters of Charity in Ireland have responded to calls for their help both at home and as far afield as Nigeria and the Fiji Islands.
